There's a hole in my bucket!

There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza,
There's a hole.

Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it.

With what should I fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what should I fix it, dear Liza, with what?

Do you remember this song? It started running through my mind this morning as I sat looking out the window.  In front of me were three large windows that look out onto the lake.  I love just gazing at the sky, the water, the birds and the hole in the screen?  "How long has that been there", I wondered to myself.

Over a year ago, our dog Spunky had jumped up onto the screen and tore several small holes in it. We didn't want to look at those nasty little holes , nor did we want to go and fix the screen,  so we just turned it around so that the holes were now at the top of the screen.  Then if we wanted, we could just pull the blinds down far enough to cover the holes and all is well!  Sometimes we didn't even remember that the holes were there.  We are just so used to them, we don't even see them.

Aren't we like this with other things as well?  From the time of Adam and Eve in the garden we have tried to hide ourselves from God and from the consequences of our sin. Moses tried it, Achan tried it, David tried it and Peter tried. Sometimes we just try to ignore it and try to forget that it is even there.

There's a hole in the bucket!

Often I just ignore the hole and I pretend everything is okey dokey, meanwhile stuff is dripping everywhere. I pretend just like the Pharisees did that everything looks perfectly fine but inside, I am a mess!

Then fix it!

Like pulling the screen down, or rearranging the screen I also try to make adjustments, rationalizations or accommodations for my sin.  I try to fix myself.  Eventually however, everything is found out!

“No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. Luke 8:16-17
With what shall I fix it?
There is only one way that we can be fixed, healed and restored!  The greatest nes is that God doesn't just want to fix us, he wants to remake us!  Completely new!
  • It starts with asking him to do so.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9
  • Then he makes us completely new.
if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! IICorinthians 5:17

Father, here is my bucket.  I don't want to try an fix it any more.  Can I have a new one please?  Thank you for your promises of a new life full of your forgiveness, healing and love!  Jann

Wake up Sleeper!

Holy Spirit come fill us
Touch us, change us,
Rearrange us
Heal us, free us
Lord, we seek Your face
Wash us, cleanse us, please forgive us,
Mold us, make us,
Come and shake us
Lord, let Your glory fill this place.

These words from the song, Let your Glory Fill this Place moved me this Sunday! The words filled every part of my being and I had no choice but to respond by shouting and clapping.  I stood up before I even knew what was happening.  It was the only thing that I could do in response to these words,
"Come Holy Spirit"
I encourage you to pray the words of this song and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you, change you, rearrange you!

As I was listening to the choir sing this song the words from Ephesians "wake up Sleeper" filled my heart. It was as if God took my face in his hands and said, "Jann time to get up".

Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

I don't want to be sleeping my life away!  The kind of existence where every day you do the same things, routine after routine, no joy, just existing. I want more! More of everything that the God of the universe has for me! I want the Holy Spirit to do only what He can do in and through me.  I want Him to fill me with His glory!

The rest of the verse explains what living fully awake looks like.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:14-20

Father You promise to fill us with the Holy Spirit and that He will be our Helper, Comforter, and Guide.  Empower me to be fully awake, aware of your presence and your grace. I want to live this Ephesians verse!
Thank you for giving us everything. I love you.  Jann

I can't handle the heat!

I made some yummy, yummy chicken enchiladas this week. They were filled with moist chicken, Monterrey jack cheese, smothered in a green chili enchilada sauce and sour cream.

I love to cook and more than that, I love to eat!!

I was so excited to have enchiladas with my family. When I sat down my enchiladas didn't feel very warm so I heated them up in the microwave. The first bite was all that I had hoped it would be. Warm and gooey, definitely not low calorie. In all of it's yumminess it was also the perfect temperature.

I quickly loaded up my fork with the second bite. Everything seemed fine until I realized that the enchilada was blazing hot inside. Apparently the microwave had made a hot spot inside the enchilada. This excessive heat was now burning my mouth. Instead of spitting it out I had the idea to just blow on it while it was still in my mouth. I began the very mature and elegant style of sucking in air to cool it down. I felt like I was doing a Lamaze breathing exercise!

Unfortunately for me, I sucked air in very quickly and swallowed the steaming enchilada.

It felt like liquid fire sliding and scorching down my throat until it was extinguished in the ocean of my stomach! I know you think I am exaggerating but the next day my throat was still aching. I burned my throat all because I thought that I could handle the heat!

This silly situation made me think of how it relates to struggles I have in my life with Christ.

1.Getting to close to the fire!
I was so eager to eat the enchilada that I did not count the cost or feel it to see if it was too hot. I persisted even when I knew it was dangerously hot!

each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:14-15

2. Taking my eyes off of Jesus
I was in gluttony land and not really thinking about anything but getting what I wanted. My food!

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. I Peter 5:8

3. Following my way and not God's way
I had an opportunity to not get hurt if I would have changed the situation and spit out my food.

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2Timothy 2:22

Where do you find yourself today?

The great news is that Jesus has told us that we are not alone! You don't have to handle the heat by yourself.

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.         John 14:26-27

Father, Forgive me for getting too close to the fire! Help me to follow your ways and not my own, to turn from things that are not in your plan and to keep my eyes always on you. Jann
