Out of Control



Stress can do funny things to people. I am not saying that we don't have the right to be stressed. Life gives us many curve balls when we least expect them.  It's what happens to us in the midst of them that can send us over the edge! Answer for yourself what you do when you are stressed.

Many of the items on this list are what I do when I am overwhelmed with stress. 
 I hate that I know what triggers the stress yet still allow it to produce disquietude within me. Feeling out of control produces some mighty big anxiety for me. It is in these moments that fear can overtake me, dragging me into the pit! 
I am so glad that God has not left these feelings out of the bible.  Many of our favorites have expressed their feelings of hopelessness, despair, frustration, fear and anger.

Biblical answers for our stress

Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.1 Chronicles 28:19-21


When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Psalm 34:17-20
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Remember that you are not alone, Cry out to God and abide with Him. The stress will never go away but we do not have to be out of control, let's leave that to God.

Mayonnaise I'm a Believer



Have you ever heard of the use of mayonnaise in cleaning watermarks off of wood? I've seen it several times on Pinterest and wondered, Can it be true?"

This week I had a personal experience with one humongous watermark!


The rather large and scary culprit was about 10 inches in diameter! Remembering what I had seen about the amazing benefits of mayo I went right to work!


The directions are to take a little mayo rub it into the watermark, leave it for about 15 minutes then buff it out.  "Could this really work?", I muttered as I applied the magic white stuff! In less than 5 minutes I found out the truth for myself. Look at my results!


Seriously, It works! Wow, Wow Wow!!!!  I'm a believer!

What I learned
Some things seem so incredible that we are left wondering if they could possibly be true. We are often left asking question after question. 

Questions like


Is God real?
Can I trust God?
Does God really love me?
Is there a heaven?
What difference does it make if I believe?
How can I experience joy and peace?



Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8


All I know is that I tried all that God has to offer and He is trustworthy.  Seriously, He works! Wow, Wow, Wow!

A little bit of a Distraction

Tap, tap, tap on my shoulder. "What is she doing?" The dental assistant tapped on my left shoulder as the Dentist applied the needle into the right side of my mouth.  Before I knew it the needle was out and I hardly felt anything. I'm not afraid of the dentist, but who loves to get a shot?  The little bit of a distraction kept my focus just long enough for the painful part to quickly pass. 


Laying there with my mouth wide open, drooling, water spraying, hose sucking and drill grinding, all I could think of was, 
"Blessed are you, O Lord, our God, King of the universe who gave someone the knowledge to create Novocaine!"  
Funny but I was also distracted from the new fillings that were being placed into my mouth by the thought of what God had done! This distraction kept me from focusing on what was really going on inside of my mouth! Whizz, whizz, grind, spray, whizz, grind, grind! 

What I learned

We always have a choice about what we focus on. Like the woman tapping on my shoulder, God wants to take our attention off of our troubles and fix our eyes on Him.  Does it take our troubles away? No, but it does give us a new perspective. Life is messy but keeping our eyes, our hearts and minds securely attached to Jesus makes all of the difference!  Just give me Jesus and I will be alright!

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. – 2 Corinthians 4:18

Contraction Surgery

 "Expand, Contract, Expand, Contract" We say as we show the students in the 2nd grade classroom how to conduct contraction surgery. Next we place our surgical masks on and squeeze our hands into the plastic gloves.  I of course have put my thumb into the pinkie portion! :)  Using the supplies of scissors, bandages, word sheets and markers we demonstrate how to create a contraction. The surgery is to remove the letters that are not a part of the contraction and then to use a bandage to represent the apostrophe. Once we completed the demonstration, the students began to conduct their own operations. It was a riot watching the students in surgical masks trying to navigate the rubber gloves and the sticky bandages.  


The result of this lesson was of course to have students understand that contractions represent two words that have been smooshed together. From the looks of their end product they got the message loud and clear. 


Every day God is trying to show us the lesson of the contraction surgery.  There are many things that we cling to that we simply do not need to be happy. Some of these things are possessions others are attitudes or behaviors.
Warning, surgery may be required and it may hurt a little.

Will you let Him do the surgery?

I have this mental picture of thousands of people with brightly colored bandages representing the surgery that God did in their life. I am sure that many people like myself would have a multitude of bandages because several surgeries would be required.

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

New tires!

In my marriage, my sweet husband takes care of everything regarding our cars. This means, filling up the gas tank, getting oil changes, small maintenance issues and changing the tires.  My domain definitely is the kitchen and my husband loves that I enjoy cooking. A few months ago, we noticed that a light indicating that there was an issue with the car kept coming on.  After investigating what this warning was for, we found out that it was a tire pressure alert light.  The tire was refilled with air and the next day the light remained on and the tire pressure still proceeded to get lower and lower. Again the tire was refilled with air and the very same thing happened. 


My husband took the car in to the local tire and repair shop to resolve the issue. later in the day I received the message that the car need some repairs, new tires and that it would cost several hundred dollars to fix. Don't you just love those bills?

That evening we went and picked up the car, I felt a sense of relief that my husband had taken care of this while I was at work. I wondered though, why the alert light was still on.

The next day my husband asked me if the tires looked new. I honestly only know if a tire looks really old and worn down. Over the next 2 days we began to notice that the tire pressure continued to diminish. " It must be the sensor", we both agreed.

After a return visit we found out our answer.


The owner of the tire shop came out and looked at the car, his words are forever etched in our minds!

"Well, the reason these don't look like new tires, is because, well, they are old tires!  Somehow we didn't put on the new tires! 
There was nothing wrong with the sensor, just a uncompleted task by an employee.

This reminded me of how often we continue in life in the same patterns that we have always done, yet expecting different results! Like the old tires, our old habits and patterns and life must be changed, remade into new patterns if we want to make lasting changes! Here is the good news, we don't have to do this by ourselves!

The bible is full of verses that talk about change.

I Corinthians 15:51 says we will all be changed.
Philippians 3:21 reminds that He will transform us.
2 Corinthians 5:17 We are a new creation.
Matthew 9:17 tells the story of the wine skins.
Romans 6:4 encourages us to live a new life.


"if you always do what you have always done, then you will always get what you have always gotten"


Why not try something new in you relationship with God today?
Pray out loud, kneel in prayer, ask for something really big, begin a new habit of praise.

He is able





To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his

 glorious presence without fault and with great joy. Jude 1:24

He who is able. God is sufficiently powerful! 

In mountain climbing, the beginning hiker attaches himself to the expert
 so that if he loses his footing he won’t stumble and fall to his death.
 In the same manner, if we  keep connected with God, we cannot fall. 
He keeps us safe.


The word able means- The God who is continually able

He is able to- establish you
Rom 16:25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to the gospel

He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly more

Eph 3:20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or
 imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.

We worship a God who is capable, and present and powerful!

He who is able will Keep you from stumbling

It is ultimately God who keeps us from stumbling and falling.

Keep- means
to guard a person (or thing) that they may remain safe

1) from suffering violence, be despoiled, etc. to protect
2) to protect one from a person or thing
3) to keep from being snatched away, preserve safe and unimpaired
4) to guard from being lost or perishing
5) to guard one's self from a thing

To keep is like a Garrison. As if God and His angels are surrounding you-Once and for all. 

A FORTRESS BY WHICH WE ARE SURROUNDED. He is our rear guard. Isaiah 52:12 

He will keep you from stumbling or falling

He will establish you so that you do not slip! Psalm 66:9

There are times when I know in my mind that God is able to keep me from falling, but when everything is spinning, it feels like chaos.  As if I am falling, tumbling out of control. 

This where faith comes in to play.  Do I trust Him enough?  Do I remember that He is able? He is, after all the same God who parted the red sea, brought Lazarus back to life, sent manna from heaven. He is the same one who healed the blind man, walked on water, created the heavens and the earth. He who is able, is able to keep me from falling.

Our job-trust Him!

When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your love, O LORD, supported me. Psalm 94:18

Praise God that He is Able to hold onto us~

Crossword puzzle

Every Sunday Morning I sit next to my mother in church.  Recently I noticed a quirky behavior that she has. Upon receiving the bulletin she gets out her pen and begins to fill in the empty spaces in her notes.  I was surprised that she so quickly could figure out what our pastor was teaching about. There were many times that she began filling in the words before anything was projected on the screen.  After a few weeks of this I asked her why she does it. I will never forget her response to me.
"Filling in the blanks is just like completing a crossword puzzle, I like the challenge of it!"
I must admit it was a novel approach to listening to the sermon.  We do this often in our relationship with God. Trying to out guess him. I am so guilty of trying to figure out God's plan for my life.  Sometimes I even make things fit into the puzzle that maybe don't fit but I want them so I push them in.

Jeremiah 29:11 says that God knows the plans he has for us.  Not that we know His plans.


If you struggle with letting God direct your steps, here are some verses that may help you to trust Him more.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5

Thus says the Lord, Your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go. Isaiah 48:17

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” Psalm 32:8

For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death. Psalm 48:14


The Lord will guide you continually  Isaiah 58:11



Take delight in the LORD, 

   and he will give you the desires of your heart.

  Commit your way to the LORD; 

   trust in him and he will do this: 

 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, 
   your vindication like the noonday sun.

Golden Earring

Since age 4, The Boy has asked for a piercing in his ear, and since age 4, I’ve said, “Sorry. No.” To be perfectly honest, I didn’t really care one way or another if my son wore an earring or not, but I knew that his military academy graduate father did, and out of respect for The Colonel I denied the requests for an earring without wavering. Regardless of my unyielding position, this exchange between my son and me took place every time we I passed the Gold Kiosk. At age 8, he surprised me as he broke character and went off-script after we passed the kiosk. Instead of asking if he could destroy a perfectly good ear that I had worked 9 months to make, he asked to borrow my phone. Assuming that he wanted it to play Tetris, I handed it over.

Tactical Error by Mom.

He called his father. At the time, Dad was an Air Force orthopedic surgeon, who happened to be, on this particular occasion, knee deep in an elbow replacement, or elbow deep in a complete knee replacement- (I’m not sure which anymore) in his operating room, which was packed with his team. The Colonel’s interns, residents, o.r. technicians and nurses all knew my cell number, and though it was rare that I would call him on a surgery day, if a call did come through from my phone, one of them would scrub out, turn down the Classic Rock that suppressed the sound of power tools, push “talk” and hold the phone up to his ear while everyone in the room listened for the next crazy story I might be calling about.  (They think I’m insane. I don’t know how they came to that conclusion. <grin>)

Instead, this time here was a little voice dripping with hope and awesome on the other end.

“Hi Dad. It’s me. How are you? Are you cutting someone’s guts open?” (About this time, back at the mall, I nearly stroke out right there between the Gold Kiosk and The Gap and frantically start looking for one of those defibrillator things that hang on a wall to re-start my failing heart...)

“It’s Friday. The Good Doctor is most certainly in surgery.  He knows this.”, I tell myself.  I realize this is a calculated ploy. He’s calling his father because he knows it’s too difficult to debate with an 8–year old in the middle of surgery.

”Uh, I’m at the mall and I’m standing next to the Gold Kiosk. Do you care if I get my ear pierced? I don’t think Mom minds.” I swear I gave birth to Calvin from Bill Waterson’s comic, Calvin and Hobbes.

“Son, may I please speak with your Mother?”

Kill me!

That was the last time I handed either one of my kids my phone without asking, “Who are we calling?”

Fast forward 9 years of Gold Kiosk drive-by’s at the mall. The 7 year old is now 16 and he is growing into a seasoned sailor and diver with 15 ocean voyages under his belt. His captain, mentor and most reliable friend is a 6’5”, burly, balding & bearded giant of a guy with piercing blue eyes and a heart as big as Texas. He also has an earlobe with 2 or 3 small, subtle golden rings that perforate his ear. I secretly think they look rather nice but I don’t share that with The Boy, who needs no encouragement to keep the earring dialogue going.

It was during a 4-day road trip with The Boy, three Februarys ago that The Captain had occasion to share a story with him while driving. I wasn’t actually in the car as it was told, so forgive my creative license as I re-tell it, but it went something like this:

“Boy, do you know why sailors wear gold earrings in their ears?”

“No, Sir. I don’t.“

“Well, back in the day when ships were a primary means of travel, a sailor might be out to sea for long periods of time. While on the water and with medicine being what it was back then, there were many, many ways by which a man could grow sick and die. It was a true state of affairs albeit unfortunate, that if a sailor were to die mid-voyage, he literally went from being part of a mighty ship’s crew to becoming, “dead weight” that burdened the ship more even as the crew was now one man short. His corpse essentially became rotting cargo. It was a common practice therefore, to dispose of a dead sailor by the way of Davy Jones’ Locker if you know what I mean.”

“Yes, Sir. He was tossed overboard.”

“That’s right he was given a sea burial and tossed right off the side, left to the wake of the boat and to the appetites of the predators below- that is, unless he was carrying the money to pay his passage back home so that his loved ones and family could give him a proper burial.”

“Yes Sir. Having money would be good for that.” (I can imagine the Boy getting nervous about where this conversation is going, considering his job during the summer. I know I would have been!)

“So you see, it was for this very reason- as an insurance policy, that sailors began to place gold rings through their earlobes- to be removed only upon their death as payment for passage home.”

I’ve since learned that depending on how far a man was sailing, or in which hemisphere he voyaged, he would have 1, 2 or 3 rings in his ear- all related to the cost of going home. Today’s mariners therefore, wear earrings as a reminder that they belong somewhere and intend to return there.

And with the conclusion of the story, The Captain who knew that The Colonel was not cool with his teenage son piercing a perfectly good ear reached into his pocket and pulled out a small gold coin. On one side was a sea turtle, and the other, a crown. It was a 50 dollar gold piece from the British Virgin Islands that at one time had been real currency. He handed the gold coin to The Boy and told him, “This is for you to keep so that you can always find your way home.”

The timing of all of this was significant in that The Boy would be graduating in a few months, then off to sail the Caribbean with The Captain as usual. From there he was starting his freshman year of college in a state that was completely new to him. He knew that while he was down island that summer, I would be placing his childhood home on the market, locking the door one last time and joining The Colonel across the country. We had just purchased a new home and he was joining a civilian practice. It was all an awful lot for one Boy to bear.

I’ll never forget him telling me the story about the coin because he was standing in the bare living room of that new place with tears in his eyes as he opened up a clenched fist and showed it to me. The Captain had taken a 10 hour detour in a snow storm during that road trip just to allow The Boy to see the new place with his own eyes before going back to finish high school and start his new life away from any home he’s ever had. I melted.

I love the history behind the story of the sailors and their earrings. I love the depth of compassion and timing behind the actions of The Captain. I love that now at almost 20-years old, The Boy still keeps that gold coin close; wearing it on a signet ring we had custom made for him for his high school graduation.  I also love that I am reminded of this story every single time I cruise past one of my favorite, heavily highlighted passages in the Psalm 19:

9 “The fear of the LORD is pure, 
   enduring forever. 
The decrees of the LORD are firm, 
   and all of them are righteous.

 10 They are more precious than gold, 
   than much pure gold; …”



It was probably because of this short passage 32 years ago that I realized in a life-changing way, that the passage home for believers is found only through a pure and lasting relationship with The Divine. That in this climate of waffling faith and watered down belief systems, it is the Word of a Holy God that stands firm and unmoved amidst the ebb and flow of society’s shifting value system. It is His righteousness that we cling to in the midst of storms and it is an incessant desire to reflect with our lives and our hearts the truths we find in His Word that anchors our lives to Him and paves our way home. And indeed, the psalmist reminded me that night in my room alone and through no uncertain terms, that these things are more precious than the purest of gold.

Like most things about God that confound man, it’s easy to look around us and see examples of the abandonment of Truth in pursuit of riches or worldly treasures. How silly of us, when we already know that it is the truth of God that is the most valuable of all things within our grasp. It is this truth, and this truth only that ensures our passage home. 

Every morning since the day my son shared that story, as I stand before the bathroom mirror and carefully put on my earrings, I have taken a moment to thank God for that precious price he paid on our behalf. I have committed myself to being more mindful of His holiness and more appreciative of the strength of His Word in my life. I’m not perfect- I’m certainly not worthy…but somehow this morning ritual has lent itself to fortifying the things upon which I have come to most heavily rely.

And I pray that my son will continue to do the same as he periodically removes the new, bright ring that now hangs discreetly, just out of sight, beneath his messy mop of sun-bleached, blonde hair. It sits there in the cartilage of his right ear in homage to the ocean habitat he loves, the Captain he adores and the rad God he is learning to serve.

Inexcusable


When I read this I did not like it! 
Not because I dislike God forgiving me, but rather because I fall so short in forgiving others.

Through the years we all have been hurt by people. The list varies for all of us. 

We may have experienced

Abuse, alcoholism, affairs, anger, abandoned
Beatings, backstabbing, belittling
Cruelty, cheating, coldness
Divorce, death, denials
Emptiness, envy
Failures, foolishness, fighting
Gossip, 
Hidden agendas, hopes dashed

I could go on and on.

I am right there with you. Even after I have asked for God to help me to forgive someone, that intense feeling still remains. I have cried out to God more times than anyone knows, "What they have done is inexcusable"! 

Gently, softly I hear His voice, "forgive, as I have forgiven you." Colossians 3:13 So I try again to forgive and move on. This is not easy for me and has taken so long to see any growth in.

Just the other day I drove by a place that usually filled me with anger. This day, this wonderful day, I felt nothing! Oh the joy of freedom from that hold on me!

On the other hand, I am still struggling with one particular hurt! This time when I cry out that their behavior is inexcusable I hear His voice saying to me "Let it go, my grace is sufficient". II Corinthians 12:9

I am selfish! His grace is sufficient, but I have not wanted to extend that grace to others. I am the one who has acted in an inexcusable way!

Father, you have been so gracious and patient with me. Forgive me for being ungrateful! Change my inexcusable behavior and attitude. Fill me to overflowing with your grace and forgiveness that is extended to others. Thank you for your freedom that you grace gives. Jann




The Fish Bowl game



Recently our small group gathered and played a game, Fish Bowl. 

These are the directions. 

1. Each person writes a sentence on a slip of paper. These are put in a bowl ("the fish bowl"). 
2.Players describe each sentence. They receive a point for each slip they get correctly. You cannot skip slips. 
3. A timer is set for 2 minutes, at the end, the teams switch. This continues until all the slips have been correctly guessed.
4. Next, the slips are put back in, but this time people can only act it out (not speaking). Timer is set for 1 minute
5. Finally, the sentences are put back in and the individual trying to give away what they are can only say one word. If they say anything (e.g. "shoot", "hmmmph", "ahhh") this counts as their word and they can't skip the slip or say anything else. Game Secretary


We had so much fun! At first no one thought that they would get the sentence but amazingly, all sentences were guessed. This was no easy feat! Here is a list of some of our sentences

The Detroit Lions are going to the playoffs.
Chocolate covered coffee beans make me happy!
Oh say can you see?
They lived happily ever after.
It is indeed a beautiful day outside.

I noticed that as each round went by it was easier to guess the sentence because we were more acquainted with it, the sentence was familiar to us. By the third round where only one word was given as a clue, our minds quickly raced to the sentences and we were able to complete it. Even when someone said "umm", the team started rattling off the sentences and we were able to get the correct answer.

What I Learned

The more that we spend time with God getting to know Him and His word, the more we will be able understand
His ways,
His leading,
His promptings.
We will not be surprised,
Rather because we are so acquainted with Him,
Familiar of His ways,
We will be able to follow Him more fully.

I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. 
Praise be to you, LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount 
all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes 
as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts 
and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees;

My Prayer Lord is this;
Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness;

True or False?

At school this week I had a remarkable conversation with a first grade student. "I'm not afraid of that!", John declared proudly as he pointed to a tiger on the worksheet. Then as he continued to color, he quietly confided in me, 

"You know what I am afraid of?  I am afraid of those people, they eat bugs!"  

I could hardly contain my laughter. This First grader was completely serious as he shared his fear with me.  Clearly he had some misconceptions about a certain people group, but nonetheless he was adamant about his beliefs.
How often have you held to a false belief? 
Growing up our parents told us many things, some were true and some mere misconceptions. I remember my mom telling me to NEVER run the hot water when the garbage disposal was on. "It will burn out the motor", she would remind me. For 45 years I never ran hot water when the disposal was on! 

One night, after a meal with friends, during the clean up, my friend ran the hot water, while the garbage disposal was on!!! I became very anxious and ran over to turn the water to cold.  I reiterated what I had been told by my mother.  Everyone began to laugh! Come to find out, I had clung to a false belief for 45 years!!!!!

God's word tell us the things that we can truly put our trust in.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. John 14:1 

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Romans 12:9 

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

In the middle of the valley of Guadalupe just north of Ensenada, Mexico is the church of Tierra Santa. We have been going to this location for many years to stand alongside of Alejandro and his congregation. Upon arriving, high school students tumbled out of the large dusty white vans and began to unload the trailer of supplies and what seemed like thousands of sleeping bags.

Soon it was time for the evening message and worship. My husband asked if I could walk down to the house and retrieve a bag that had been left in the trailer. He warned me that opening and closing the trailer was difficult and maybe I should have someone come with me to help. I proudly exclaimed, “I got it!
He handed me the keys and a flashlight and I went alone. I was grateful for a few moments away from the hustle and bustle of the students and briskly set off down the dirt road. Behind the Pastor’s house in the dark was the large white equipment trailer.
Reaching up on my tiptoes, I unlocked the large metal door at the back of the trailer. As I pulled the door down it became a ramp. “That was remarkably easy,” I proudly thought to myself! Shining the flashlight into the back of the trailer, I quickly found the bag and walked out.
This is when the fun began! The door that had so easily opened was now a formidable opponent! It felt as though a thousand pounds was pushing against me! I tried all sorts of creative ways to get that door closed. First, I tried pushing it up halfway and then quickly getting my back under it, but I didn’t have enough strength to close it. After that I climbed up on the bumper and slowly pulled the heavy metal door up, but that ended with me falling off the trailer and landing in the dirt.

While lying in the dirt, pondering what I might do, it occurred to me that I had only two options:
(1) I could leave the trailer open with the contents vulnerable to theft and walk back to tell my husband that I was unable to complete my task, or
(2) I could figure out another way to close it.
Clearly failure was not an option after my bold declaration of “I got it!” At that moment a new thought arose, “use a rope to pull it closed.” Somehow those science classes came rushing back to me and I remembered how to construct a pulley system. MacGyver has nothing on me!
I strutted to the church, bag in hand, ready to proudly deliver it to my husband. As my moment to gloat became closer I was convicted and realized that my husband had simply been looking out for me and it was my pride that blinded me. Getting the bag would have been less of an ordeal if only I would have just heeded his advice to take help.
Scripture warns us over and over again about pride.
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
Here are my lessons:
1. We have a hard time loving when we focus on ourselves. If I would have seen my husband’s desire to take care of me, instead of thinking that he saw me as weak, the trailer wouldn’t have been so difficult.
The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground? Obadiah 1:3
2. We have a hard time loving when we think that we are all sufficient. God has created us to need others. My desire to do it by myself clearly missed the mark.
In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. Psalm 10:3-4
3. We have a hard time loving when we leave God out of the picture. I don’t recall asking God for help during this entire process. Yes, I pretty much tried to do it by myself.
Marriage is difficult enough, don’t let pride be a relationship killer.
• When you are tempted to focus on yourself, remember that pride is a relationship killer.
• When you think that you don’t need anyone’s help, remember that pride is a relationship killer.
• When you think that you can do it without God, remember that pride is a relationship killer.

Father, help me to honor, respect and show love to my husband.  Thank you for giving us great examples of how to build a relationship built on your love and grace. Forgive me for being proud. I have been humbled sufficiently!  Jann

Guest Blog; Surrendered to the broom

I am employed at an apartment complex in Orange County, my title is "resident services". In a nut shell, I oversee about 800 residents and ensure that they feel valued and taken care of on a daily basis, which I can assure you is not any easy task. I work in the leasing office and even have my own fancy desk and executive leather chair. 


Last week I was sitting at my desk responding to emails when my co-worker came up behind me and yelled 
"Don't move and whatever you do, don't look down!" 
I instantly froze, lifting my feet up off the ground and stretching my arms out in front of me. It reminded me of playing games with my sister, Jeni, as a kid and she would tell me if I didn't freeze every limb on my body, I would fall into hot lava and die! In this instance, the wood floor beneath me was hot lava, and my fancy leather chair was the only thing stopping me from it! 


My co-worker rolled me back in my chair to uncover and giant roach crawling underneath me! I unfroze and jumped out of my chair as fast as I could! I was screeching, as all grown women do when they see icky pests running around, I'm sure. My co-worker quickly grabbed a broom and began sweeping the roach towards the front door. The roach starting out fighting, trying to run away from the broom, but he kept getting knocked down by the bristles of the broom. Finally the roach just stopped and rolled over. He just gave up, surrendered to the broom. 

I thought about how often I put up a fight with God and try to run away and do what I think is best for my life. Ultimately I always end up rolling over giving Him full reign to do what he wants with me and my life. Just like the roach did with the broom.





How often do we run from the broom? Fighting with everything we've got to get away and do our own thing, until we roll over and surrender? 


Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,

God's plans are always better than our own.

When I was 12 years old I met a boy.  Kevin lived down the street and had two really cute younger brothers. I didn't know it when I first met him, but he was going to be my husband. Nearly every day I spoke with Kevin and we became close friends.  Often we would share with each other about the person that we had a crush on or Kevin and his friends would come over for dinner.  Little by little our worlds became more and more intertwined.


One day my mother abruptly said, "Why don't you like Kevin?"  That thought had never, never, never, crossed my mind.  You see Kevin was nice and he was my friend, but he was not a surfer, or a skater. He just wasn't on my list. He didn't fit into my plan. 




28 years ago I married this boy that wasn't part of my plan, but was the gift that God had for me.  He is my best friend, partner in ministry, life and love!

God's plans are always better than our own. 

My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the LORD.

  • My ideas are limited, His are infinite 
  • My resources are limited, His are endless
  • My knowledge is limited, His is omnipotent
  • My grace is limited, His is all covering
  • My gifts are limited, He is the giver of all gifts
  • My time is now, His is perfect
Often we are tempted to take matters into our own hands and try to play God.  I believe He knows best and can be trusted!  Sometimes this requires waiting for his perfect timing.  

Father, Thank you for having a way better plan than we could ever have. We are impatient people, short sighted and unable to comprehend how big you really are!  Give us a glimpse of your vastness, of your glory and splendor.  Remind us that we can trust in your plan because You are trustworthy!
