Kung Fu Panda II Is Inner Peace possible?

My mom and I went to see Kung Fu Panda II today. It had the typical bumbling, but cute panda and the rest of the fab 5 crew.  New to this episode was the evil peacock plotting to takeover all of China.

I was struck by the focus of the movie on "inner peace"  Panda had seen his teacher trying to discover inner peace through kung fu and he too wanted it and in the end savves all of China because he found it!

I want inner peace too! However, I know that true peace, everlasting peace only comes through Jesus!

He is the one that was promised

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given... and his name will be called, 'Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (sa shalom)  Isaiah 9:6

sa shalom when used as a noun, shalom, means, "wholeness", "fullness", "totality", "completeness". It means wholeness where nothing, no component or part is missing, impaired or damaged.
  • Jesus came to give us shalom- To restore what had been broken- our relationship with the Father."We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ," Romans 5.1.
  • Jesus restores shalom that which is empty, broken or separated by making peace by the blood of his cross" (Col 1.20).
  • Jesus gave us a different kind of inner peace.                                                                Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27

There are many things that cause us to feel broken, fractured, stressed out and not at peace. Like the Panda, we all crave peace.

My prayer for you is that you would experience this verse. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Never leave home without it!

Cycling not only requires a great bike but it also requires the necessary equipment -your cycling armor!

When I get ready to ride I get dressed in my padded bike shorts, cycling jersey complete with its 3 back pouches and light efficient socks.
Next it is important that you have firm bike shoes, protective helmet, padded biking gloves, odometer, mirror, bike pump, water, sunglasses and a bike pack to carry an extra tube and other supplies.
Travelling without any of these items is out of the question! They are essentials to a successful and prepared bike adventure.
Scripture tells us that we also have some essentials for our Christian adventures.

...Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.              Ephesians 6:10-17 (NIV)

  • The Belt of truth is like the Odometer. It tells us the truth about the ride.
  • The Breastplate of righteousness is like our Jersey and bike shorts. They cover us and protect us from harm.
  • The Gospel of peace is like bike shoes that prepare us to go forward.
  • The Shield of faith is like sunglasses. They shield us from distortions.
  • The Helmet of salvation is like our bike helmet. It surrounds us and protects us from a sure demise without it.
  • The Sword of the Spirit is like the web program-Map my ride. It gives us direction and guidance regarding our rides and everything pertaining to our success.

I would never go cycling without these things! Why would I consider going out without my spiritual protection???

Let’s do life with the Full armor of God! Put it on!

Father help me to remember to not only put on your armor but to use it daily! Thank you for using cycling to remind me of my need to be prepared using what you have given to me.  Jann

Don't Get Wet!

Memory Monday
This morning my mind was flooded with the memory of sitting on a wooden bridge with my brother Chuck.
Earlier that crisp autumn day we had decided that it would be fun to go down to the creek and sit on the bridge. We rushed into the presence of our mom to ask if it would be okay to do so. Her exact words were, "Don't get wet!" Off we ran brimming with giggling excitement. After trekking through the overgrown path to the bridge we decided to walk along the creek's bank to collect some rocks. We needed an arsenal to throw into the water. What happened next is pivotal to the story. I slipped and did what my mother asked me not to do, yes, I was all wet! Slush, slush, slush was the sound of my shoes as I climbed up to the bridge. "Mom is going to be so mad at me", I whimpered!

In a few minutes we were dangling our feet over the water and throwing rocks into the water. That's when It happened!  The idea to rectify my situation was so simple. "Chucky, mom won't know that I got wet if I tell her that my shoes fell off into the water" I exclaimed proudly!
It is true, I threw my new shoes into the water and watched them float away!
There was more evidence however and those 2 socks also met their demise into the creek. What my elementary mind did not think through was that my mother had much more wisdom and experience than I did.  She quickly caught me in my lie and the consequences followed.

Looking back I understand that my carefully planned excuse and cover-up was a lie, no matter how I try to sugar coat it.  It reminds me of Adam and Eve in the garden trying to hide and justify their sinfulness.

Thankfully we have the good news of Christ!  We do not have to hide from Him!  He loves us and knows all about us!  He has seen our sinfulness and has forgiven us!
God is sheer mercy and grace;
not easily angered, he's rich in love.
He doesn't endlessly nag and scold,
      nor hold grudges forever.
He doesn't treat us as our sins deserve,
nor pay us back in full for our wrongs.
As high as heaven is over the earth,
so strong is his love to those who fear him.
And as far as sunrise is from sunset,
he has separated us from our sins.
As parents feel for their children,
God feels for those who fear him.
He knows us inside and out,
keeps in mind that we're made of mud.
Psalm 103 The Message

Be careful of the Cracks!

Have you ever played the Jenga game? The game is simple, you take out little wood blocks and eventually the whole things tumble down. It falls because the foundation has been weakened.

Today's blog is a summary of a message that my husband Kevin and I gave this morning.  Be Careful of Cracks in your Life”

There is an amazing story from history about the city of Sardis.  You may recall that Sardis is mentioned in Revelation as one of the 7 churches. The city of Sardis was a real city that had to deal with some cracks!

Located at about 1500 ft. high on top of Mt Tmolus with very sheer cliffs that were almost impossible to climb. Because of the city’s difficult and isolated location the residents believed that it they could not be infiltrated by opposing armies. They thought they were safe!  The people of the city became overconfident, cocky, proud, lazy and complacent.
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! I Corinthians 10:12

 1. Be careful of what you think of yourself
Think: This is what you suppose or feel about yourself. What kind of opinion do you have regarding yourself?

Important Facts About House Foundations
A. It's the most important part of the building.
You can't just build without planning what it is you're building on.

If you build a house on the beach your house is going to disappear with the next incoming tide. Something has to hold the structure of the building up. If you read through all of Matt 5-7, you'll notice that the foundation Jesus talked about was that of a godly character - Christ-like attitudes.

What's important is the kind of people we are and a good foundation gives us integrity.

B. The foundation is the first part to go in. We can't build the structure until the foundation is in, or we're asking for trouble.

Imagine building your house without a foundation. An inspector would say, "You've got to pull this house down and start again - this time with a foundation." He says that because he knows that without the foundation your house will fall down anyway! It could even be dangerous.

Likewise we may think "Why doesn't God just fulfill everything He's promised in our lives immediately?" He's laying the foundation - making sure it will stand the pressure - the weight of the whole building. He wants to make sure it doesn't destroy us. That's why God's never in a hurry. The foundation must go in first.

C. The foundation takes the weight of the house / building.
If it's not done properly the house will eventually come crashing down.

Ever wonder why some of the most talented people have such spectacular failures?  Because of the bad foundation. Talent is a part of the house, but what they do is build the house on a shoddy foundation. These people have suffered disgrace, jail, even death, largely because of the kind of foundation that was built into their lives. So remember - the foundation takes the weight of the house - If it's not done properly the house will eventually come crashing down.

D. The foundation (the most important part) is hidden from sight.

Prophet Samuel is sent to choose the next king of Israel. When he saw Eliab, Jesse's eldest son, he was impressed, and thought, "Wow, this must be the guy." 1 Sam 16:7 Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
Nobody says, "What a lovely foundation. I love it! I just love the color - grey. That's just the most beautiful slab. And how thick is that concrete! I wish I'd seen those little barstools going in, and the mesh." Imagine having slab-laying parties, instead of house warming parties. "Now that's a great right angle you've got on that corner."
What would really happen if you said to someone, "Hey, want to come and see my slab?" They'd probably think you're crazy. Aren't they more interested in the structure that goes up on the slab, the big rooms, the bathroom, the decor. When you buy a block of land, the question is, "When's the house going up?" Not: "Call me when the slab goes down." We do the same with our lives, we ignore the quality of the foundation.

This is why God is so interested in the foundations of our lives.

Sardis neglected their foundation and cracks began to appear.  The foundations and walls of their city had begun to deteriorate. At first the cracks were small and unnoticeable; but as time progressed, those tiny cracks grew bigger, deeper, and wider.

2. Be careful how you stand  Paul is urging us to life in a state of watchfulness regarding our spiritual lives and being in a firm stance on what we believe in faith.

How is your spiritual stance today?

The city of Sardis is like most of us, we get so busy with life and tossed around with all of the expectations and issues of life or possibly so confident of our own abilities that we become unaware of our own spiritual need. We go on in life as though we have no need to deal with the foundation of our lives not realizing that tiny cracks are starting to form.

Crackscracks. The Holy Spirit wants to come and repair them.

The people in Sardis let apathy take over.  They boasted in their self confidence. They felt sure that foreign aggressors could not make war on them!  While their arrogance grew so did the cracks! As time progressed those tiny cracks grew, finally the gaps in the walls became so wide that a human body could easily slip through them. The people were not even aware that they were at risk!

One afternoon, a Persian soldier named Lagoras watched a soldier from Sardis sneak down the back wall in order to retrieve his helmet that had fallen. That night while the city of Sardis was sleeping, the army snuck up and scaled the cliffs and slithered through the cracks in the foundations and walls of the city. In the morning, the city of Sardis awoke to find that they had been conquered, one crack at a time. The city hadn't been as careful about their foundation defense as they should have been, and they people paid for that.

3. Be careful that you don’t fall

Be careful about your thinking, your standing, so you can be prepared and not fall! Don’t be so proud that you think it couldn’t happen to you, so smug you fall into complacency.

Are you aware of areas of your life that have deteriorated and need attention?   Could you fall?  What are your slippery slope areas?

4. The challenge to the church of Sardis
A couple more things about the city of Sardis. It was overtaken twice by it's enemies and had a terrible earthquake that destroyed the city.  It puts this passage into a new understanding.
Revelation 3:1-3 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

“Strengthen what remains…hold it fast… repent.” We must never fall into complacency!

Look at your foundation, is it built on Christ?  What can you do to continually strengthen your relationship with him?

Ask God to reveal to you the areas that are weak and need to be strengthened.
Ask Him to show you the cracks that are weakening your witness and your spiritual life.

Some of this information was modified from the book Sparkling Gems by Rick Renner.

More than Bowling!

This week our couple's small group went bowling. It has been quite a while since I have walked through the doors of a bowling establishment.                              "How hard can it be, Wii bowling is pretty easy" I told myself.

Upon entering there is an overwhelming greasy fragrance that greets you with the orchestra of pins crashing and balls rolling down the lanes.

A few things that I know about bowling

  • Bowling shoes are cool! I have loved them forever.
  • It is harder than it looks
  • Strikes are good, gutter balls are bad!
  • Warning! Don't go past the foul line it is slippery and you may fall.
  • There are arrows on the lane that help direct you.
  • Bowling balls are heavy!
  • It takes practice!
We had fun even though I scored in the "what are you doing here?" category. The second time my score was pretty close to my age.
Laughing and talking all the way through, I was reminded that it is good to be together!  God did not make us to be alone!  He gave us friends to help and encourage us!
How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! Psalm 133

During the last game of bowling we decided to make up the manner in which you could bowl.

Our group bowled
  • Lying down face forward
  • Non dominant hand
  • Grasping the ball
  • Throwing under your partner's legs
  • Backwards
  • Sitting on the knee of you partner
Scanning the room, I am sure that the more focused bowlers couldn't wait till we left! Laughing and having fun together made me smile.
A cheerful heart is good medicine. Proverbs 17

Bowling reminded me that I need others to encourage and spur me on! It was only bowling, but doing it together is the best part!

let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

Father, thank you that you created us for community! I love these dear friends and need them in my life! Help me to remember that I am not alone!

3 days in a row!

It has been so much fun getting back into cycling.  I would ride every day if I could find the time.  Riding with friends and discovering new areas is great fun. Last year I stepped up and acquired a new road bike.  It zooms along faster than I thought was possible. Recently, my husband treated me to a little shopping spree to add all of the gadgets and emergency items to my bike.  We bought a mirror, extra water bottle rack, bike bag, portable pump, and a CO2 inflater.  The man at the bike shop was informative and told us how to change the tires and use the pumps. I felt secure in knowing that I had all of the necessary items.

Day 1: On the first day after school let out I was determined to get my ride in. The weather was perfect, cool and misty.  I had a personal best going on when suddenly I noticed that the bike wasn't normal. A quick glance and I saw it! The back tire was flat!
"Seriously", I whined out loud!  "What did that man say to do with a flat tire?"  I couldn't remember and I was not prepared to change the tire on my bike. Fortunately a friend was gracious and came and picked me up!
That night my husband and I changed the tire together. We took the tire off the bike, removed the tire and checked the tube. After checking the inside of the tire we discovered a small piece of glass protruding. After pulling the glass out we inflated the tire a little and reassembled the tire. I felt a sense of accomplishment!

Day 2: The next morning I set out with Lori for a ride!  One mile into the ride a noticed a way to familiar feel to the bike, another flat in the back tire!  Really? After a trip to the bike shop to change the tire, it was found that there was more glass deep within the tire!

Day 3: I met a friend on Kent trails to start a long ride. Off we went, both of us are new to biking so we had lots to talk about! As we whizzed down the trail and eventually were approaching the river trail my friend Kim said, "look at my back tire, it doesn't feel right". Yes! She had a flat tire! "No problem", I thought. I have the tools.  Bike pump, C02 inflater, we can figure it out!  After thirty minutes of hand pumping that resulted in tired arms we decided to try the C02 inflater. It was a comedy of errors! The air came gushing out, but not into the tire! I grabbed my phone "honey, can you come pick us up?"

3 days in a row of flat tires! What am I supposed to learn from this?  I had the necessary tools, but didn't know how to use them. This not only effected me but the people who were with me.

Have you ever had something in your life that you just weren't prepared for?

The only way to be prepared in this life is to know the one who created you! He has given us everything we need (the tools) to live a life that pleases Him.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Ephesians 1

Father, There are many things as Christians that we have been given that we do not always know how to access or use. Help us to use the tools; the Fruit of the Spirit, the whole Armor of God, prayer and spiritual gifts. Show us how to be prepared by trusting in you! P.S. Could you also protect my tires?  Jann

The coffee debacle

I love coffee!  The aroma of the fresh ground beans just makes me happy! It is in fact the first thing I think of in the morning! In addition to loving my coffee, I expect several things from my it.
  • It must be hot! Lukewarm or reheated is a no no!
  • The taste I prefer is bold and dark, but not bitter.
  • I drink it black, nothing added.
  • It must provide me with the necessary caffeine jolt.

Each morning this wonderful, delightful, caffeine filled beverage is made by my sweet husband!

Until..........

Three days ago, I started having a slight headache.  I attributed it to the summer, exercising more, dehydration, tiredness etc.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think that there was a mutiny underfoot! I like to call it the great coffee debacle!

de·ba·cle/diˈbakəl/
Noun: A sudden and ignominious failure; a fiasco.

My husband decided that we should switch to half decaf and half regular coffee. Something to do with too much caffeine isn't good for you! I had wondered why he was asking how the coffee was?  I never suspected that I was being under-dosed!  I was beginning to think that there was something wrong with me.

The same is true for me when I do not spend time with the Lord.  Something is not right!  I feel under-dosed! When I am in His presence there is a certain filling that happens, a peace that comes, a joy that is revealed. I find answers and wisdom from His word.  I have tried the half God and half world thing.
Doesn't work so well for me.  Life is not the same without Him!

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? Psalm 42 1-2

Father, thank you for the coffee debacle! It reminded me to spend time with you! Help me to crave you more than coffee! I want to think of you first when I awake!  Your coffee addicted daughter, Jann.
