A wonderful counselor is someone who gives us good advice.
Jesus is a wonderful counselor because He doesn't just tell us what we want to hear but what we need to hear!
He speaks on behalf of the Father.
I have some good friends who will speak the truth in love. Sometimes it is quite painful to hear it. They will tell me when I have been selfish with my actions and words. Or at times they will remind me that my words can be hurtful and judgmental. I need friends like this that will counsel me. Often times in my life and ministry I will go to friends who have more experience than I do and ask them, "what would you do?"
What counsel do you have for me?
I also read books that help me to understand what to do. As a teacher I read books that counsel me on how to instruct students who are struggling.
In my marriage I surround myself with couples who have been married for longer than I have and have weathered the storms. I learn from them. They counsel me.
But as good as all of these sources of counseling are they do not compare to the surpassing knowledge of Jesus and His wise counsel. So today as we reflect on the names of Jesus, Wonderful Counselor. Where do you need counsel?
Do you need Him to give you guidance today? Maybe you need counsel in overcoming a past hurt or a new hurt. A squabble in a relationship, a misunderstanding with a friend. What to do next. A job change, a move, going back to school. The wonderful Counselor would love to meet with you and talk with you.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Prayer
Wonderful Counselor, lead us, guide us, show us the way. Thank you for always listening, and gently shepherding us into your your will.
A great reminder that He is the first one we should run to.
ReplyDeleteShelly, this is something that I always need to remind myself of.
